As fans everywhere anxiously await the 2018 release of the long anticipated Black Panther movie, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther himself, there has been much speculation about not only who else will be part of the action packed cast, but what characters they will play. Well, wait no longer. An announcement was made this weekend at the San Diego Comic Con, and here’s what we know so far…
Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger
Named N’Jadaka, Killmonger was a child when Ulysses Klaw invaded Wakanda to pilfer the country’s Vibranium. Klaw enslaved some Wakandans including N’Jadaka’s family. Although Klaw was ultimately driven out of Wakanda, N’Jadaka’s parents were killed during the violence, and Klaw took N’Jadaka with him. N’Jadaka eventually escaped to the U.S.A. but had no way of returning to Wakanda. He changed his name to Erik Killmonger, lived in Harlem, New York, and studied engineering and business, eventually teaching at MIT.
Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia -aka- Malice
As a child, Nakia of the Q’Noma Valley marsh tribe was picked by her tribal elders to be Milaje, and spent three years training before presented to King T’Challa; barley a teenager, she was instantly smitten with him, although he promised that her role was purely ceremonial. She became close friends with her fellow Dora Milaje, Okoye. Malice[ is] exceptionally agile, a skilled martial artist and expert with numerous Wakandan weapons. She was a skilled pilot. Killmonger enhanced her strength and accuracy to superhuman levels.
Danai Gurira as Okoye
Okoye was Dora Milaje, part of an order of wives-in-training for the King of Wakanda, who also served as his personal valets and bodyguards. Each member of the Dora Milaje was chosen from a different tribe of the Wakandas, a political tradition to ensure peace among the tribes as each held a role in the palace and a chance to become the next queen. Although long inactive, the order of Dora Milaje was reactivated by King T’Challa to smooth over political discord in the kingdom, and so Okoye and her friend Nakia were chosen from their tribes to train in the palace.
