LOS ANGELES – Nov. 28, 2023 —  This New Year, HarperCollins / Versify, announces the release of Ghost Roast, a delightful yet spooky YA graphic novel from writing duo Shawnee and Shawnelle Gibbs and artist, Emily Cannon. Blending elements of the supernatural with humor and heart, “Ghost Roast” delivers a paranormal adventure full of first crushes, lost histories, and the impossible task of fitting in when your dad is a professional ghost hunter.

In Ghost Roast, when 15-year-old Chelsea Grant is grounded for her newfound rebellious teen lifestyle, her father’s biggest punishment is making her spend her summer working with his ghost removal agency, but Chelsea doesn’t want to be any kind of ghost hunter; she just wants to be a normal teen. Chelsea’s forced into the family profession kicking and screaming, until she discovers that she has a talent for communicating with ghosts, and one in particular, a wealthy 17-year-old heir to a family fortune, who died over a century before.

“History has always intrigued us and telling a story in a city as old as New Orleans allowed us to explore the history of the city and its people in a fresh, new way,” says Shawneé.

With their own familial ties to Southern states including East Texas and Louisiana, the Gibbs Sisters set out to tell a story that would entertain, as well as shine a light on Louisiana’s unique history.

“In the background of chasing ghosts, there’s also a centuries-old family mystery to be solved which was so thrilling for us to explore,” adds Shawnelle. “When you go digging into the archives of history, frightening things will inevitably come out.”

The book is garnering early praise, including bestselling children’s book author, author Kwame Alexander, who calls Ghost Roast “Mysterious, magical, and marvelous.”

Shawnee and Shawnelle Gibbs are comic book veterans, and the creators of the indie comic book series’, The Invention of E.J. Whitaker and Fashion Forward; and recent writers of this year’s Marvel Women of Marvel (2023). The pair have written animation for television series including Cartoon Network’s Jessica’s Big Little World, Netflix’s Barbie: It Takes Two and Dreamworks Animation’s Not Quite Narwhal. Ghost Roast marks their and artist, Emily Cannon’s, YA graphic novel debut.
