Her! Who is “Her” or shall I say – who is she? Where is she from? What makes HER so special to cause such an upheaval? Why is she a person that can come into the right person’s life to accomplish – What? Also, who is her unintended savior in all this? What secrets does this man hold? These are only a few of the questions that come to mind as you are literally sucked into this debut novel from Malachi Bailey. When I say I was sucked in, I mean exactly that. With every page that you turn, the more you want to know. Yet also the more questions arise.

The summary for the story reads: A mysterious woman is found on the brink of death off the Gold Coast of Australia by Cyrus Dhandi, a fisherman with secrets of his own. With no recollection of her prior memories, she is enigmatic as she is beautiful. However, both are suddenly thrown together into a chaotic world where their lives are in peril! Threats, supernatural and deadly, attack at every turn. Can the two ill-matched strangers overcome their constant bickering before an ancient evil claims her once and for all?

HER is a wonderful return to classic storytelling with an African American twist. Yay! Every scene is painted for you so beautifully that you can’t help to have it rolling within your mind as if it was a film being played before you. The structure that this story is put together with flows flawlessly. The twist and turns are constant but the manner that you are shown what is occurring is literally ideal. What I find most appealing is that this is a story that I have not read before within such a context. In my opinion, this is a unique story that has arrived just in time for speculative fiction readers.

Malachi Bailey, himself shows great promise as a literal up and comer. With his first novel, he truly knocked it out of the park. I am not saying this because he a fellow New Yorker from Long Island. As an author, he truly took me on a journey with Her. The imagination and originality shown in the novel were like a wonderful palette cleanser. I plan on keeping an eye out for his future work, and he has definitely earned a fan over here. I’m looking forward to more literary contributions from this young author.
