Bovine League #0

Writer: Andre Owens

Art and Letters: Christian Alaminos

Editor: Holly Glassen

Publisher: Hiro Unlimited Productions

At first glance, the feel and underlying theme of Andre Owens’ latest comic creation may seem familiar to anyone who is a fan of superhero comics as we are introduced to a team of genetically modified heroes sworn to protect a world that hates and fears them. At that same first glance though readers are just as quickly made aware that this is something completely off the wall and original, as the heroes in question\ are genetically modified cows in a wonderfully strange and twisted vision of a future Earth where Switzerland is the place to be and The Bovine League are the local heroes of record!

An introductory issue for an ongoing series of which the first issue is currently on Kickstarter, Bovine League #0 is a delightfully charming title that serves its role well providing a straightforward action-packed primer to the team and all its members. Owens’ writing is engaging and hits all the right notes, brief as the tale is, readers nevertheless get to see what amounts to a full fight showing each of the team members in action and showing how well they operate as a uni,t while also getting a glimpse at the unique personalities imparted onto each character along with a decent amount of humor. Alaminos’ art (which I assume includes colors) is a delight with a nice clean style that really shines in the fast-paced high octane action sequences with vibrant and rich colors on top. While I’m no expert on cows, one thing that I think is a nice touch is each of the characters seems to be a different breed of the animal with unique looks given to each beyond just different outfits.

Bovine League #0 is great at what it is intended to be, a pint-sized powerhouse of fun and quality superhero comic goodness that takes a quirky premise and grounds it in a reality that makes the quirky seem absolutely normal. If the full issue release attached to the ongoing Kickstarter campaign is even half as good as this issue was supporters are in for a real treat!
